In 2020, I co-founded the MRKT with three other Black and Brown artists who were based in Odawa/ Ottawa (unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Territory). The MRKT is a multi-city, multidisciplinary community arts collective built by and for Black, Indigenous and racialized artists. We are dedicated to carving out space for artists to showcase, sell, and share their work, while maintaining our commitment and investment to anti-capitalistic alternatives, such as skillsharing, art trades, in-kind donations, and redistribution. Community and art cannot exist without each other- they provide a sweet symbiosis, a nurturance, and a deep understanding of what it means to be human.
